Cabinetmaking is my true passion and I prefer to build smaller, one-off pieces since I work alone. The Cramond Suite of solid wood tables, chests and stools is developing from my earlier design of an end table. The style is hard to pigeon-hole but is transitional, Krenov-inspired and with a bit of Arts and Crafts thrown in. Exposed, decorative joinery, a crispness of line and a finish that invites you to run your hand over the surfaces are keynote.
I do not restrict myself to my own designs and very often I'm shown a piece of furniture that a client has seen, but is not available in the form to suit their space. Here lie opportunities to offer clients custom, hand-built furniture that is unique and incorporate elements that may not have been in the store-bought piece.
Regardless whether it is furniture of my own design or a special order, a great deal of thought goes into the choice of wood, finishes and any characteristic that make it a Pentland Lothian piece that may become an heirloom. |
