In restoration my goal is to have as little visible impact on the piece as possible and only repair the damaged area using traditional techniques and finishes. Salvaged wood from destroyed older furniture allows me to replace missing parts using wood that will have similar character and aging to the piece being restored or repaired. Missing hardware is a challenge but there are several resources available where period reproductions can be found. This ensures that the integrity of the piece remains intact.

Refinishing takes consideration as any potential for it becoming an antique of value can be lost. I evaluate the damage to the finish first, to see if it can be restored and then consider sympathetic refinishing. This means that the piece should be refinished to appear that it has been cared for through the years. Scratches and minor damage are the scars from an active life and little is done to disguise them. Where wear would have occurred through years of use - the tops of arm rests, edges of table tops and around handles - stains will be lighter and finishes burnished to a higher sheen. When a neglected and abused piece is returned to a client I hope that it has retained the 'old grey beard' of a cherished heirloom.
